Summary The surging traffic at tourist recreation areas during weekends and holidays not only deteriorates the service level of the surrounding road system, but also ruins the travel experience. Therefore, to reverse the declining situation, it is necessary to conduct capacity analysis on road networks at tourist recreation areas. Additionally, an assessment of feasible alternatives should be introduced to determine improvement strategies. Given the facts of limited road capacity available here in Taiwan, modern ITS technologies can serve as a short term solution to relieve congestion at tourist recreation areas. Considering the thorough impact of ITS deployed strategies on the system implementation and road users, a preliminary trial is conducted on a simulated platform to examine their effectiveness before bringing them to the field site. In this project, one of the tourist recreation areas is selected as the simulation site to determine whether these strategies can heal the traffic congestion problem. Project tasks include:

Conducting an empirical study on related documents and cases.
Analyzing the present condition of the development of tourist recreation areas in Taiwan.
Analyzing ITS demands and planning ITS strategies for tourist recreation areas.
Planning the evaluation approach of ITS strategies for tourist recreation areas.
Planning the future ITS promotion strategies for tourist recreation areas.
Planning and testing the experimental simulation platform functions for evaluating the performance of ITS strategies for tourist recreation areas.
