Summary | After the development of the main products on computers, communications, and consumer electronics (3C), the fourth product (4th C) used in automobile electronic products becomes an amazing superstar in the future under the cooperation of industry, government, and academic sectors. The integrations and applications of information platforms of on-board-unit (OBU) are extremely paid close attention to this newly development area by government and industries. Meanwhile, it is common 2 focus point by intelligent transportation system (ITS)-related telematics and information societies. Via the rapid developments of communication and service, the development of internet-ITS turns out to be more mature day after day. The equipment inside automobile with mobile and hand-held communication devices would be a powerful tool to provide the ITS-related and telematics services. It can provide various ITS-related and telematics services for car driver with sufficient information within a mobile digital living space to enjoy the instant information without losing connectivity when he/she leaves out of office. The government not only vigorously arranges to deliver the related instant traffic information and ITS services to customers via OBU, but also eagerly brings more chances for relative industrial companies to create incomes from these new services to customers. Moreover, it is hoped to bring more innovation chance to create the development of domestic ITS-related and telematics service provider (TSP) to promote the service platform to increase the chance of income by value-added applications from instant traffic information. Therefore, this research project mainly focuses to grasp the key technologies of wireless communication, OBU, wireless internet surfing, traffic information platform, and value-added instant traffic information portal for customers, etc. Furthermore, we hope to create the value-chain of traffic information to help the hardware/software companies, commercial affairs and information providers, as well as to eruct a sustainable development for ITS-related industries and new services on this industrial chain. Subsequently, this research project is separated to three phases to execute. The first phase of 1st year is to review, plan and design the development of the information platform of telematics and ITS-related services with a well-developed system architecture. Some of the basic communicational tests are simultaneously performed to see all of the possible effects under heterogeneous communicational systems. The second phase of 2nd year is to erect the prototype of information platform, implement the integration test from experimental laboratories, and study the facing problems of value-added chain of traffic information, and the ITS-related issues met by industrial companies. The third phase of 3rd year is to execute the trial plan and introduce the value-added mechanisms, perform the demo testing plan, extend the demo functions and demo range, and to enhance the realization and service models on real-time instant traffic information. Finally, the research project has accomplished the indicating of instant traffic information from different bureaus. It includes the average speed of roads, mass transportation information, parking lot information, etc. We also verified various heterogeneous communications including mobile communication, the location-based service (LBS) from WiMAX technology, the availability analysis and the integration of heterogeneous networks.
