Summary | Because of the complex interactions between traffic flow, control measures and geometric design of signalized intersections, the development and application of analytical procedures for capacity analysis of signalized intersections faces serious limitations. Computer simulation can overcome many weaknesses associated with analytical modeling. This manual is prepared to promote the development and the use of simulation-based analysis procedures. It discusses first factors affecting capacities and levels of service of signalized intersections. This is followed by a discussion of the concept and nature of capacity and level of service. Then, this manual presents a simulation-based methodology for capacity analysis. The simulation model described in this manual is the Urban Traffic Systems Simulation (UTSS) model. At present, this model can only simulate the operations of pretimed signalized intersections. Instructions on the use of the UTSS model are given in the appendix of the manual. |
