Summary | The commuting and freight trips are the majority part of total trips on the industry activities. In order to understand the relationship between industries and travel demand, this two-year project attempts to synthesize the influences of the key second/tertiary industries’ development characteristics on travel demand via collecting second-hand data and interviewing the corresponding companies. This study aims to analyze the trip generation performances of truck freight transportation industry (TFTI). Two major work items were performed. First, aggregate analysis on the historical data of social, economic and industrial developments of Taiwan was conducted by linear regression models to explore the influence factors and relationships on the development of TFTI. Second, disaggregate analysis of individual companies was performed. The descriptive statistics was applied to analyze the data of surveyed TFTI companies in Northern and Central Taiwan for exploring the influences of companies’ characteristics on travel demand (freight trip generation and length, and commuting trip generation). The aggregate analysis concluded the following significant influence factors: gross domestic production (GDP) and secondary industrial production on the number of TFTI companies, population size and elementary industrial production on the number of TFTI employees, GDP and secondary industrial production on TFTI production, GDP and tertiary industrial production on TFTI capital, population size and secondary industrial production on the number of TFTI vehicles, population size and elementary industrial production on freight loads, and the secondary industrial production on tone-miles traveled. Furthermore, disaggregate analysis identified the relationships among freight trip generation, freight trip length, commuting trip generation and TFTI companies’ characteristics. These relationships can be applied to policy designing and forecasting. This report is organized as follows. Chapter one specifies the research objectives and contents. Chapter two then reviews the literatures on two fields, industrial development analysis and industrial travel demand analysis. Furthermore, the key industry of the tertiary industry was identified. Subsequently, Chapter three describes data investigation and statistical analysis, and Chapter four discusses and presents the results of data analyses. Finally, conclusions and recommendations issues are drawn in Chapter five. |
