This report is the final part of a series of studies on “Tidal current simulation on seas surrounding Taiwan”. The main purposes are to investigate the currents on east coast, where the coasts neighboring to ports of Suao and Hualien are especially focused. Basing on the two-dimensional depth-integrated shallow water waves equations, the nested grid scheme is adopted, and the MIKE21_HD model, developed by Danish Hydraulic Institute, is applied. From the computation results, it is found that the strongest currents occurred around the islet of San-sen-tai, where a reef area locating at northeast side to the entrance of Suao Port. The strongest currents occurred not only because the effects of the existing reef, but also due to the regional topographic effects of coast of Yilan, ridge of Suao, as well as the bathymetry of salient existing outside the estuary of Lanyang river. On the coast of the Hualien Port, mild tidal currents are found from the computations. However, significant sub-tidal currents appearing variations both in magnitude and direction are found from measurement analyses. We therefore concluded from the nearshore hydrodynamic computations that the sub-tidal currents were not produced by the Curoshio but mainly induced from wave breaking during the rough sea conditions. Moreover, it is worth noting that the wave-induced currents are so dominant that serious erosion occurred at southern coast of the Hualien Port, and the entrance were occasionally silted up.
