The establishment of integrated sustainable transportation indicators is an important tool for assessing the performance of transportation system. The objective of this study is to construct a sustainable transportation indicators system.
Referring to the structure of assessing performance for transportation system, which is established by Fielding et al., (ex. service inputs, service outputs, service consumption, impact, cost efficiency, cost effectiveness, service effectiveness, output impact, consumption impact.) and based on the concept of sustainable development, we have formulated a generator of sustainable transportation indicators. The generator is also considering the perspectives of economical efficiency, ecological protection, social equity and less energy consumption.
There are 27 germinal sustainable transportation indicators, which have been generated from the generation of sustainable transportation indicators. For distilling the integrated sustainable transportation indicators, we apply the principal component analysis to obtain four integrated indicators. Furthermore, for ease of practical operations, there are eight key indicators selected from germinal indicators.
The above indicators are then used to measure the sustainability of national transportation system in Taiwan. According to the results of assessment for the transportation system in Taiwan, the transportation system took forwards to the sustainability direction from 2000 to 2002. However, from 1994 to 1996, it took backwards to the sustainability direction.
