Summary | This research is extended research of the previous study entitled “The Development and Application of Universal Design Methods for Transportation Environments (1/2): Construction of the Evaluation Index and System for Universal Design.” The objective of this research is to show the possibility of implementing the Universal Design Methodology through design examples. It is hoped that the research can provide references for related management divisions to promote and gradually implement the Universal Design Methodology.
This design proposal focused on the Banqiao Station in New Taipei City to provide design on its Personal Pedestrian Guiding Device and the In-Station Sign System, in order to improve these facilities. In terms of design on the Pedestrian Guiding Device, the effectiveness of the Universal Design process and the method used in the research have been confirmed. By inviting users to participate in every stage of the implementation of the Universal Design, from discovering problems to defining principles, developing concepts, designing and manufacturing, as well as applying the established Universal Design evaluation index and the working of Universal Design mechanism, this research accomplished the design on the Personal Pedestrian Guiding Device in accordance with the philosophy of Universal Design. As for design on the Sign System, this research re-designed a new Sign System based on the problems different pedestrian groups encountered when using the existing signs to search target facilities in Banqiao Station. The effectiveness of this design is confirmed via the Universal Design evaluation index and the requirement of the Universal Design is met. |
