Summary | In the areas of highway design and the traffic management, visual Micro-simulation software can be a helpful tool for traffic engineers to evaluate the traffic effect of the road geometric design, to develop traffic strategies, and to avoid mistakes in advance. The scope of this study is concerning the evaluation of traffic effect and the detailed roadway facility designs, which include the traffic islands, curbs, traffic signs, signal controls, and etc. In addition, this study reviews and compares several competitive micro-simulation softwares. VISSIM is selected as the most suitable model of traffic characteristics in Taiwan. The target roadway of this VISSIM application is Zhong-Gang Road since its diverse geometries and complicated road styles. In order to validate and calibrate the network, an extensive survey and accurate network coding are necessary. Furthermore, this study makes a performance comparison between the existing traffic conditions and a scenario of the signal optimization at the intersection of Zhong-Gang Road and Chao-Fu Road. This example shows that micro-simulation can not only evaluate the effect of improving area but also the change of the entire network. This study develops a standard operation process, a Chinese user guide, and a training course, which provide users and technicians more efficient VISSIM application. |
