Summary | This report is a revised version of the Taiwan Highway Capacity Manual (THCM)-chapter 1, Part IV, published by the I.O.T. in 1990. It concerns the capacity and level-of-service analysis of signalized intersections. The revised chapter serves several purposes. First, it provides a knowledge base on the analysis of signalized intersections. Second, it lays a foundation for future research. And third, it provides an improved tool for capacity and level of service analysis of signalized intersections. As a departure from existing formula based methodologies, the methodology presented in the revised chapter relies on a microscopic simulation model referred to as the Urban Traffic Systems Simulation (UTSS) model. The model allows users to determine the following performance characteristics of signalized intersections: capacity, frequency of cycle failure, average stopped delays, average travel speed, and average queue reach per cycle. |
