Summary The construction of railway systems requires enormous capital expenditure. To provide appropriate capacity with expected service quality under economical conditions, it is necessary to analyze rail capacity and train reliability during planning, design, and operation stages. Recently, the institute of transportation developed models to analyze the capacity and reliability of single rail sections for conventional railway systems. However, the models do not consider the influence of the adjacent sections. Thus, the objective of this research project, “Capacity and Reliability Analysis of Rail Transportation System”, is to investigate rail capacity and train reliability for continuous sections.

In the second of the three-year research project, this study develops software to calculate rail capacity for continuous sections. The software can enhance the efficiency and practicability of capacity calculation. In addition, this study develops a model for analyzing the reliability of trains running through continuous sections. The model can estimate the average delay of trains without a timetable. In the case study, it is found that the location of a bottleneck has a great impact on the reliability of trains arriving at stations.
