Summary | The condition of bridges may deteriorate because of traffic load, wear, earthquakes and other natural disasters. Therefore, it is necessary to repair some severely damaged bridges to ensure traffic safety. However, the budget and man power are always insufficient to finish the comprehensive bridge management and maintenance. The most important issue to the bridge managers is, with limited resources, how to reduce possible losses caused by bridge damage in the future. In other words, the goal is to acquire the most benefit from the available resources. In this project, 721 bridges were proposed by county governments (630 of them are registered in the “Taiwan Bridge Management System”). The total financial demanding reaches 7 billion NT dollars, which is much higher than the budget. Hence, in the first stage, the healthy and only slightly damaged bridges are filtered with by a developed criterion. Thereafter, not only the investigated structure indices but its environmental conditions and social importance are measured to build a rating system. The final list of suggested bridges to be repaired and retrofitted is established according to both lists. In this project, 236 bridges were investigated again. A total number of 216 bridges were subsidized by a budget of 1.211 billion NT dollars. This project is based on the “Taiwan Bridge Management System” established by MOTC and discussed by the central and local government, therefore, the feasibility and necessity of the project result are very high and the implementation of this project will help to improve the long-standing bridge maintenance issue. |
