Summary Severe traffic congestions have caused a decline in the tourism and recreation quality of some scenic areas in Taiwan. As a response to this issue, the Institute of Transportation (IOT) proposed the i3 Travel Project in 2011. This project is focused on Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area with the concepts of innovative thinking, intelligent information and service, and interesting travels and life, thereby forming the i3 Travel Project. Based on the concepts of information integration and active service, this project not only aims to provide instant location-based traffic and travel information, but also to present seamless public transportation services with excellent quality; thus, minimizing the proportion of private transportation in Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area.

This project reinforces the public service system established by the former project. In addition, the planning, design, and testing of low-carbon and intelligent tour transportation services were conducted based on data collected by the former system. The tour transportation service consists of four features: basic public transportation services; information service for tourists, traffic conditions, and public transportation; traffic control and shuttle services, and electric vehicle sharing service. The goal of this project is to comprehensively implement the concepts of i3 Travel in Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area, and further expand these concepts to other national scenic areas.
