Summary In Taiwan, in view of the high quality and successful experiences of Taipei MRT and Designated Bus Lane projects, other counties and cities have proposed several MRT projects in the past decade. Then, due to the unaffordable building cost, it seems that Bus Rapid Trains (BRT) have become an alternative in recent years for these counties and cities to improve public transportation service. However, the operation model and attitude of the bus industry have not been changed to comply with the operation of this new transit system (its spirit is “think rail, use bus”).

Considering this issue, this 2-year project has proposed a standardized design handbook for the BRT fleet management to help the bus companies to develop their own advanced fleet management and dispatching modules. Then, these business operators can utilize the instant bus location data to improve the efficiency of their fleet management and dispatching tasks.

The topics of the second phase of this project contain: (1) summarizing the accomplishments in the first phase
(2) developing the BRT operation prototype system
(3) deploying the system and implementing the demonstrative program
(4) evaluating the performance of the system and planning the system promotion activities. By developing the BRT operating prototype system in this project, it will facilitate the operators to efficiently and effectively complete their fleet management and dispatching. Also, in the future, it will provide the government and the business operators with valuable references to develop their own BRT systems.
