Summary This study includes 3 sub-projects to investigate specific techniques concerning the quality improvement of manhole paving material, standard construction procedures concerning the use of manhole paving materials, and strategies concerning manhole allocation. First, foreign and domestic literature relating to manhole paving material, manhole maintenance techniques, and construction case examples were collected and reviewed, examining and analyzing the extant manhole allocation in Taiwan as a theoretical basis for the improvement of manhole paving materials. Second, the finite element method (FEM), laboratory material tests, and on-site construction validation were employed to analyze the influences that manhole paving materials have on vehicle loads, develop various methods to utilize manhole paving materials, and subsequently evaluate and compare the various pros and cons of the materials and methods. Finally, the research results were used as a basis for determining the optimal solution for manhole allocation issues, reviewing the overall operation methods to cooperatively adjust current road and manhole maintenance, and formulating a set of standard construction procedures for the utilization of manhole paving materials.
