Summary | Published in June 2003 IOT SERIAL No.92-78-757,93pp. Coastal area is the interface of the sea and land, which is vital for both land development and natural resource conservation. Overall planning and assessment for coastal area can provide optimal and sustainable development, management and utilization. Tidal area survey is important for coastal area management and should be done before planning. However, traditional ground survey is not feasible and is too expensive for large area reconnaissance. This study tries to introduce high-resolution satellite images to build the database for Taiwan harbor and coast. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will also be built at the same time for storing, managing, analyzing, and applying satellite images. This can serve as useful tools for harbor planning, management and coastal change information accordingly. In 2000, we built eight major harbors’ IKONOS images database in the project “building an Images Database for Taiwan Harbors and Coast”. This year we continued to build a database for coastal images form Taichung Da-Chia River to Tainan Chi-Ku. Modeling of the shallow water depth by multispectral images, coastal area resource and characteristics of water body survey were also performed in this research. A 3D visualization function using virtual reality technology was added to the previous image database system. This research provides the coastal orthophotos from Taichung to Tainan County. IKONOS multispectral images of Nan Wan, Ping-Tung County were selected together with field bathymetric survey, the statistic model of high-resolution satellite image showed that 30 cm accuracy can be obtained above 10 m water depth. Keelung Harbor 3D virtual reality system has been designed by integrating satellite images and a Digital Terrain Model (DTM). |
