This project is one of the pioneering projects of “E-Service of Traffic Information” which aim to integrate traffic information from different resources into one platform. It reviews Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) research, analyzes functional requirements for a regional ATIS center, and conducts comprehensive planning for the platform in metropolitan areas. A metropolitan area, Taichung City, has been chosen to deploy a demonstrative traffic information system.

Data sources from the Bus Dynamic Information System, Taxi Satellite Dispatching System and vehicle detectors will be consolidated and used to exploit a traffic information platform for providing real-time traffic information to road users, traffic control centers and traffic information value-added companies. These components will establish the basic foundation for the ATIS.

The functionalities of the demonstrative ATIS information system are as follows:

1. Data Collection
Utilize the real-time bus and taxi information to transform into real-time traffic information.

  Collect information from vehicle detectors.

Data entry by system operators for the information collected through the CCTV cameras or provided by road users.

Data entry by system operators for the information provided by police or road construction units.

2. Data Manipulation
Adopt the “Data Fusion” technique to integrate and transform information that has been collected from different data sources, such as the Bus Dynamic Information System, Taxi Satellite Dispatching System and vehicle detectors.

3. Information Dissemination
The system will disseminate information to the public through the Internet in both Chinese and English by way of interactive Web Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The information includes:

  Real-time traffic information

  Real-time intersection CCTV images

Updated traffic accident and road construction information

  Transit information

  Parking information

  Tourist information

Traffic information provided to value-added companies
