Summary The construction of railway systems requires enormous capital expenditure. As a result, systematic researches on capacity and reliability are essential to economically provide the appropriate capacity with the expected service quality. Recently, the Institute of Transportation developed models to analyze rail capacity and the reliability of single sections for conventional railway systems. The models did not, however, consider the influence of the adjacent sections. Thus, the objective of this research project, “Capacity and Reliability Analysis of Rail Transportation System”, is to investigate rail capacity and train reliability for continuous sections.

This study is the first year of the three-year project. The focus is to analyze train delays of the Taiwan Railway System (TRA). The results shed light on the time-space distribution and risks of train delays. Based on the results, several strategies to improve service reliability are proposed. In addition, this study develops a rail capacity model for continuous sections while considering the interference between trains and overtaking maneuver. The model can be used to evaluate the capacity of the TRA in a more realistic way.
