Summary This research reviews domestic bicycle lane system and that of foreign countries such as Germany, Japan, Australia and the USA to define and classify bicycle lanes into six types: mixed traffic lanes, crawler lanes, bicycle lanes, shared sidewalks, sharedsidewalk paths and bicycle paths. Road types, local traffic behavior and characteristics of conflicts among bicyclists and other road users such as temporary roadside parking of cars, buses and trucks are taken into consideration for the traffic planning and design of various driving and riding spaces, with which a hierarchy of safety levels and traffic engineering measures are proposed to reduce the conflicts mentioned above. In addition, the research divides the factors that affect bicycle-friendliness into four indicators: safety, comfort, convenience and attractiveness. With the help of questionnaires, the bicyclists’perception of the importance of these four indicators is used to measure the level of bicycle-friendliness in urban roads, so as to allow the public to choose appropriate and safe cycling routes, which can then expand groups of bicycle users.
