Summary The number of motor vehicles has been growing rapidly, in Taiwan, and traffic conditions have become more complex than ever. In addition, the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), using high-tech computers and communications to enhance traveler safety and efficiency, are gradually proliferating worldwide. Compared to the on-road vehicle test, driving simulators (DS) have many advantages. Simulators can provide a safer environment, a lower cost and allow the replication of experimental situations. Hence, a DS is a useful and economical tool employed to explore driver behavior in relation to ITS technologies and to different drivers, vehicles, roads, and environmental situations.
This is the third-year project for DS from 2004. The results of this year include: (1) The rebuilding of DS: To combine the dashboard signals and three rear-view mirrors, and improve the sense of realism in the DS cabin. (2) The validation of DS: Established driving condition between driving simulator and field test: the results show no significant difference between the driving simulator and field test. (3) The evaluation procedure of ITS equipment: To propose the evaluation procedure for driving performance and workload, the study completed the research cases. (4) The study on the application of DS: The studies include “The effect of mixed traffic flow on the driver’s behavior”, “The effect of In Vehicle Information System (IVIS) on the driving performance”, and “The effect of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) on the driver’s behavior”. (5) Driver’s basic experimental response behavior database: To construct a basic driving response behavior interface database. (6) Scenario module and planning of IOT-DS city: The study created a scenario module and IOT-DS city plan.
