Summary | Published in June 2004 IOT SERIAL No. 93-84-4186, 148 pp. With an island type economy, Taiwan’s continuous economic development is heavily depending upon its participation in international trades. In recent years, the trades between Taiwan and Northeast Asia countries have been remaining an upward growth. The economic and trade measures of Northeast Asia countries have chain reactions on Taiwan too, especially the trades between two sides of Taiwan Strait. Because of the cheap raw material and labor force in China, Taiwanese companies, sharing the same Chinese cultural and language with the mainland, have been enthusiastic in trading and investing in China recently. The trade relationship between two sides shows interdependence, and Taiwan is more dependent on the mainland than ever, but has also got huge trade surplus in the past years. In the future, it is expected that the influence of mainland’s market on Taiwan’s economy will continue to increase. After joining WTO, Taiwan government should consider the problem of deregulation, under the principle of “Further opening-up and effective management”. On the other hand, Taiwan should improve its trade and investment environment, R&D ability, and upgrade its industrial structure, so as to avoid being isolated in the cross-strait relationship. In so doing, the status of Taiwan’s economic can remain stable. |
