Because our freeways and expressways do not have a formal name for each interchange, road users may exit from freeways or expressways at a wrong interchange. It is necessary to develop a systematic and internationalized principle for naming the interchanges of freeways and expressways.

This study reviews the naming system of interchanges in other countries, including America, Japan, etc. There are two numbering approaches to identify interchanges: mileage numbering or consecutive numbering. Besides, this study develops a questionnaire for road users about the principle of naming interchanges of freeways and expressways. The results of the questionnaire indicate that road users prefer using mileage and a Chinese name to identify an interchange, and prefer a township or city name as the Chinese name.

This study refers to the approaches of interchange numbering and the results of questionnaire to constitute the mileage numbering and the principle of giving a Chinese name for the interchange of freeways and expressways. The results of this study can be served as a reference for the authorities.
