Summary | Published in January 2004 IOT SERIAL No. 93-1-1208, 135pp. Competition and cooperation are the two characteristics of the cross-straits shipping market. So, the oligopoly theory is used in the analysis of this study, in which cross-straits shipping fleet was the focus in analyzing the economic benefit. Direct shipping scenario was the main focus in this study scope. In this study, we discussed the cross-straits social economic and the analysis demand of shipping companies and the economic benefit of shipping fleet in the cross-straits direct shipping. We used questionnaires to obtain the basic data, then set up the demand model of cross-straits shipping fleet by using Grey theory. Finally using the oligopoly analysis, we discussed the economic benefit of cross-straits shipping fleet. The results show direct shipping of cross-straits is necessary, as suggested by the shipping companies, and that Kaoshiung and Shanghai ports are the best choice for the direct shipping containerships to berth at. According to the whole scale of cross-straits shipping fleet, Mainland China has bigger shipping fleet than Taiwan. Shipping companies regard Kaoshiung port as the center of dispatching empty containers. The dependence of Taiwan’s external trade towards Mainland China is increasing. Seaborne laden containers from Taiwan to Hong Kong transshipment destined for Mainland China is more than the other way around. The economic benefit for two sides of strategic alliance is more than individual, no limited shipping fleet. |
