Summary | As the domestic traffic network is expanding (freeways and expressways have opened to traffic in succession) and the trend of tourism for the citizens of Taiwan is flourishing, a humanized, internationally recognized, systematic and user-friendly guide sign system is increasingly imperative to guide passengers to arrive at their destinations smoothly. Despite the fact that Taiwan has conducted several studies on guide sign systems in recent years and some of the road authorities have introduced their own sets of standards, these have not yet been adopted in the "Guidelines for Implementing Traffic Signs, Markers and Signals" or its relevant specifications, which leads to the result that the overall guide signs in Taiwan are lacking consistency and systematization.
From 2007 to 2009, the Institute of Transportation (IOT), Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), had completed a three-year "the Manual on Uniform Guide Signs" research project (3/3). The project compiled domestic and foreign related provisions and the routines of implementing guide signs in Taiwan. The project has set up a set of systematic standards for implementing guide signs and has recorded the standards in “Guidelines for Implementing Guide Signs” to provide a reference for engineers to implement guide signs. "Automatic Guide Sign Drawing Software" and "Computer-aided Guide Sign Planning Software" were also developed. The pictures of computerized guide signs are provided to the road authorities as a reference for planning and implementing guide signs. To expand these accomplishments, a two-year project starting from 2010 has been launched to promote the application of the guidelines and computer-aided tools. In the first phase, this project has completed the website for the guidelines, revised the guidelines and updated the computer-aided tools. In the following phase, other than continuing to revise the guidelines and the computer-aided tools, software training and technology transfer were conducted to promote the accomplishments to the road traffic agencies. |
