Summary The purpose of this studies is to survey the travel characteristics of households within 23 districts of Tainan Metropolitan. Data-collection activities conducted in this research include the review of previous research, the applications of previous home interviews, current home interviews, screenline survey, external cordon survey, public transportation survey, the analysis of current public transportation in Tainan Metropolitan, the analysis of current land use in Tainan Metropolitan. In home interviews, valid sample size is up to 5,021 and sampling rate is about 1.11%.  40 field stations were set in 4 screenlines to collect traffic volumes for 16 or 24 hours. 16 external cordon stations were set to collect traffic volumes for 16 or 24 hours.  In roadside questionnaires, valid sample size is up to 5,139 and sampling rate of each external cordon station is between 10% and 15%. The survey of travel characteristics for local bus passengers was conducted on 90 bus routes in Tainan Metropolitan. In the year of 1999, the population in the Tainan Metropolitan is round 1.53 million and 0.45 million of households.  Based on the statistical analysis of above survey, total sum of individual trips is up to 3.69 million in weekday. Average daily trips of each household are about 8.17 individual trips. Average daily trips per person are about 2.27 individual trips. According to the results from survey, the trips categorized by purpose are as follows: home-based work trips are 12,982(31.6%), home-based non-work trips are 16,746(40.8%), home-based school trips are 8,342(20.3%) and non-home trips are 2,969(7.3%).  The trips classified by mode are as follows: 45.2% of trips are drivers of motorcycle, 6.0% of trips are passengers of motorcycle, 15.3% of trips are drivers of car, 3.7% of trips are passengers of cars, 2.8% of trips are taking small truck, the trips for taxi are 0.7%, the trips for bus are 1.5%, special bus trips are only 1.9%, the trips for train are only 0.1%, the plane trips are almost 0.0%, 9.6% are trips taking bicycle, the trips for walk are12.6%, the trips of other modes are 0.6%.  Based on the results of survey data, the average travel time by walk is the shortest (10 minutes), and the longest is by transit (over 100 minutes). The average travel time for other modes is between 15 and 50 minutes.
