Summary Several major bus accidents have led to injury or death of passengers in recent years. In order to reduce bus accidents and the number of injury and death of passengers, the MOTC has made various amendments to the Regulations Governing Road Traffic Safety and related rules, on which it bases its execution of measures such as limiting the running districts, prohibiting the use of reused tires, requiring installation of vehicle DVR systems and passenger seatbelts of all seats, increasing the frequency of inspections ,and strengthening the safety structure of the vehicles’ bodies.

In order to increase bus safety, this study collected and compared information on periodical inspection systems being employed in Germany and Japan, and discussed the satisfaction of the various items covered by the systems. It was recommended that the Germany safety inspections system (SP) be used as a reference. Importance must be placed on inspection of items that have greater impact on safety and on the strengthening inspections of bus chassis, so as to provide the MOTC with a reference for improving periodical bus inspections in the future.
