The modernization of domestic traffic engineering development is highly related to the service level of our transportation systems in Taiwan. Generally speaking, the lack of and varied qualities of traffic engineering professionals have long bean problems. Now with the establishment of Departments of Transportation in many city and country governments, the problems became more obvious. Therefore, the central government has assigned the Institute of Transportation to take on this responsibility. Later, a five-year on-the-job training program (from January 1, 2002 through November 15, 2006) has been established and assigned to the NCKU Research and Development Foundation via a formal proposal competition. This study and relevant works are the first year of this program. Major outcomes of this project include: (1) Collection and review of the experiences of domestic traffic engineering training programs in the past
(2) The planning of training course schedule, and the collection and presentation of modern traffic engineering technologies (i.e. the establishment of a new World-wide Web and its website: www.trafficwin.com.tw)
(3) Surveying of those traffic engineering officials to for a assess their needs realize in traffic-engineering. Besides, many experts and scholars have been invited to joint formal panel discussion to exchange ideas of the course subjects and their contents
(4) Based on the responses of trainees and trainers, lots of teaching and learning conditions, reviews, and suggestions have been gathered for further reviews
(5)A follow-up four-year Traffic Engineering Training Scheme has been developed and carefully reviewed
(6)An analysis of the establishment of national traffic engineering training education framework combined with a professional transportation knowledge bank have been done and presented to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for reference.
