Summary Drivers usually need wide range of information to accomplish their driving activities such as vehicle control, route choice and impact reaction. In-Vehicle Traffic Broadcasting System (IVTBS) can be the most useful medium for people while they are driving. In order to provide drivers useful real-time traffic information in quickly moving situations, the use of broadcasting/receiving techniques and the content of information should be designed carefully. The basic requirement is that under any circumstances it must not cause drivers to over-react. Generally speaking, carefully designed information disseminated by the IVTBS is believed to have certain effect on improving traffic situation. Therefore, it can be treated as a part of the applying control strategies for traffic management agencies.

The main purpose of this research is to establish the developing mechanism for intelligent traffic information broadcasting system. The main contents of this study include:

(1) The in-vehicle traffic broadcasting system in foreign countries.

(2) The current applications for specified domestic traffic broadcasting systems.

(3) The DSRC system.

(4) The wide-areabroadcasting system.

(5) The basic principles for the development of intelligent traffic broadcasting system.

(6) Suggestions for the implementation of intelligent traffic broadcasting system on freeways.
