Summary | Published in March 2005 To extend the results and experience of the research of “Development of the Platform for Integrated Traffic Information Systems” carried out by the Institute of Transportation (IOT) in Taichung City in 2003, this project aims to verify the feasibility of applying the traffic information estimation methods to other areas and to enhance the convenience for the public to access traffic information. A metropolitan area, Kaohsiung City, has been chosen to deploy the previously developed traffic information system. Besides having a 450-bus dynamic information system in operation and a recently completed traffic facilities database system, Kaohsiung City Government sponsors this project with an additional eight million dollars for purchasing hardware facilities, including information center equipment, traffic information monitoring equipment (VD,CCTV), and associated communication costs. Therefore, this project helps Kaohsiung City develop its traffic information center. The main purpose of the Kaohsiung City Traffic Information Center is to apply communication and information technology to help road users in selecting desirable transportation modes, routes and departure times. Besides traffic information, this center also collects parking, transferring, and other modes’ operational information. Making use of information centralization and different dissemination forms, the Kaohsiung City Traffic Information Center developed by this project would help to reduce the interface gap among different systems and agencies and allow the public to obtain real time traffic information by surfing the integrated traffic information portal website. Therefore, people will enjoy and experience a seamless travel environment. |
