Summary Opposite collision, which contributes more than 10% of traffic accident death types every year, is a notable accident type in Taiwan area.  The functions of guardrail or barriers are designed to separate traffic, to prevent vehicles from roadside hazardous obstacles, and to alleviate the collision momentum.  This study is to analyze how we could apply barriers to improve and prevent opposite collision accidents.By reference reviews and questionnaire surveys, this study analyzes and compares the differences of several major barriers.  The major comparisons include installation conditions and applicability, construction and maintenance, effects of prevention, costs, barriers’ characteristics, design standards, and users’ opinions. Finally, this study proposes the preliminary planning for future crash experiment to as a reference for proceeding studies.
