Summary | A three-years study have been carried out on the influences of harbor oscillations by long period wave issues, the purpose is to reduce the long period oscillations inside a harbor and to reduce the occurrence of the breakage of ship mooring cable during the severe wave climates. In this first year, the related references about theoretical or disaster case studies were collected and reviewed, the mechanisms of any possible disasters were classified. To Take as an example, an integrated study of wave conditions on the vicinity of the Hualien Port have been proceeded including the analysis of field observations of Longwang Typhoon in 2005, an establishment of harbor assessment numerical model, an evaluation on the hydraulic performances of wave dissipation structure. The final target is allocated to using a novel wave dissipation structure to dissipate the long period wave energy inside the harbor in state of other possible solutions. In the second year study, the capabilities of the renewed wave flume and the wave dissipation facilities of the wave tank will be tested, several possible prototypes of long period wave dissipation structures will be assessed in a wave flume. Wave forces acting on the wharf and the related wave energy dissipationabilities will be studied. All the achievements of first two year’s studies will transferred into third year study for the practical application of the structure. A summary discussion about the suitable anti-long period wave structures will also be concluded. Results and benefits: In this first year’s study, the mechanisms of failure and their strategies of previous studies was discussed and integrated for the future studies. The prototypes of the wave energy dissipation structures were proposed and evaluated. Possible Governmental Applications: To provide the available information for the decision making about the improvements of harbor tranquility and shore protection strategies for transportation department of central or local governments, port authorities, Water Resource Agency. |
