Summary | DER&U methodology is designated in the Highway Maintenance Manual, published by the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC), when performing regular bridge inspection. The methodology is able to quickly evaluate and quantify the degrees of deterioration of bridge components and consequently calculate the condition of the bridge via a condition index (CI). However, since results of visual inspection can be very different due to training, experience, and subjective senses of the inspector, it is crucial to have a standard manual for visual bridge inspection. The current “General Visual Inspection Manual for Highway Bridges” was published in 1995, in which inspection guidelines were relatively simple and only targeted girder-type concrete bridges. Special types of bridges, such as cable-stayed, arch, and railway were not mentioned in the manual. This project aims at studying and revising the old manual to come out with a new “Bridge Visual Inspection and Evaluation Manual (Draft)” for highway, railway, and special bridges. In the new manual, preparation work and key points of bridge inspection, evaluation standards for rating the deterioration of bridge components, and auxiliary deterioration photos are thoroughly provided. A complete bridge inspection example is also presented in the manual for reference. |
