Summary In recent years the government has continued to implement several major public transport infrastructure projects, including HSR, TRA’s improvement, MRT, and large bus terminals. However, integration between various transport modes at public transport stations is insufficient. The reason is that there is no comprehensive manual for planning, design, and operations criteria for public transportation transfer facilities at intermodal stations.

  This study focuses on drafting the planning and design criteria for public transportation transfer facilities at intermodal stations in order to be used as a reference for the departments of planning and design, administration, and operation. The items of transfer facilities discussed in this study include the kiss & ride system, park & ride system, pedestrian system, disabled access system, signage system, and transfer information system.

  This study is a two-year project. In the first term (2007), the major outcome is the draft planning and design criteria (draft) for public transportation transfer facilities at intermodal stations. In the second term (2008), it selected the new Banqiao station special district (There are different transport systems in an area) and Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT station (There are different routes in a transport system) as demonstration projects in order to check out their layouts of transfer facilities, assess the demand and level of service of transfer facilities, and survey passenger satisfaction of transfer facilities according to the draft planning and design criteria mentioned above. It also proposes renovation plans for the intermodal stations of demonstrations projects. In addition, it revises the initial draft planning and design criteria mentioned above based on the findings of demonstration projects and offers training courses and promotional campaigns for the proposed planning and design criteria for public transportation transfer facilities at intermodal stations.

  The proposed planning and design criteria (draft) for public transportation transfer facilities at intermodal stations can be used as the standards of planning, design, and inspection for newly-built intermodal stations, as well as a reference of renovation for existing intermodal stations.
