Summary | This manual describes major traffic characteristics of the basic sections of urban expressways and presents a methodology for capacity and level-of-service analysis of basic sections. The methodology described in the manual can be used for both planning analysis and operational analysis. It requires that inside lanes and outside lanes be analyzed separately. Example applications are given. To facilitate design and evaluations, the qualities of traffic operations of urban expressways are classified in terms of average speed into six levels of service. Traffic operations of the basic sections of urban expressways appear to be affected by the spacing between adjacent ramps. Existing data, however, are too limited to quantify such relationships. |
