By using the crash and health insurance data in the Integrated Road Traffic Accident Data System (prototype) built by Institute of Transportation in 2003, this study examined the associated medical expenses in terms of injured body region and injury severity resulted from victims involved in road crashes. The injured body region and injury severity were transferred from medical diagnose codes recorded in health insurance data through ICDMAP program.

This study focused on the inpatient and outpatient expenses of victims attending hospitals within short term after road crashes. Besides exploring Taiwan elder’s medical expense patterns in associated with road crashes, this study tried to estimate average medical expense caused by elder involved in road crashes of Taiwan.

The numerical analysis results showed that the medical expense is around 100-250 million (NT dollar in 2001 valuta) annually for elder involved in road crashes of Taiwan. However, by taking into account the fatality and injury under reporting adjustment suggested by Transportation Research Laboratory of UK, the medical expenses of fatal elder would be around NT 30-50 million, and the medical expenses of injured elder would be around NT 630-1050 million annually.
