To assess the overall characteristics of marine meteorology in each divisive sea area, we have conducted many long-term surveys, observations and analysis of marine meteorology around the sea of the five international harbors in Taiwan since 1986, and have achieved satisfactory results to serve as useful references for research in marine engineering.

This year’s project is to continue the long-term research in 2002. This project, the third project in 2000, is to introduce some sophisticated instruments for observation so that these five international harbors can connect with each other into a long-term weather observational net to make it easier for us to access long-term information.

The observation station in Kaohsiung Harbor was set up in 2000. The observation station in Keelung Harbor and Hualien Harbor was set up in 2001, while the observation station in Suao Harbor was set up in 2002 and another was set up in Taichung Harbor. In order to remedy the limitation of the observation station, a set of models were developed for contrast with the local marine meteorological information collected near harbor area. We hope to identify more holistic and complete characteristics of marine meteorology in this way.
