Summary | This study aimed to explore the effective strategies of periodical training for heavy vehicle drivers via comparing professional driver training system between Taiwan and advanced western countries and analyzing accident data of heavy vehicles in Taiwan. The results showed that commercial buses have the highest accident rate, while large lorry vehicles, whether for commercial or private purposes, have a higher accident frequency than commercial buses. Therefore, the current periodical training system simply applied to commercial bus drivers should be examined. We suggest that four strategies be enhanced to raise the safety level for all heavy vehicle drivers, including authorizing a legal status for a periodical training system, expanding the training scope of heavy vehicle drivers, revising the training courses as well as promoting recruiting and self-training mechanism for commercial transport companies. |
