Summary International Standard Organization (ISO) and Open GIS Consortium (OGC) have dedicated in the development of open standard for the geographic data and application services. Several standards are also developed, such as Web mapping service (WMS), geographic markup language (GML), etc. ISO has adopted OGC’s WMS and GML as its ISO 19100 series standard and OGC has adopted ISO’s 19115 standard as its metadata standard. In the meantime, OGC extends its GML with the capabilities to handle the sensor data, which is called SensorML. Through the ideal of SensorML, several sensors’ data can be integrated to provide the idea of “Sensor Network,” which is originally issued by the U.S. The applications of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) need to use spatial data, such as vehicle navigation, real-time bus information, etc. Several organizations have developed couple standards for ITS uses, such as ISO’s TC204 working group 3 and 8, US NTCIP’s TCIP for public transit, Japanese Industry Standard Committee (JISC)’s digital road map (DRM). Thereafter, this research introduces the idea of GML into the use of national traffic network and vehicle detectors which are essential elements in developing ITS in Taiwan. SensorML is utilized to demonstrate its capability in information sharing for vehicle detectors. Major tasks in this research include as follows.
Literature review in the spatial data format which has been used or developed in Taiwan, such as W3C’s SVG and Japanese digital road map

The introduction of GML and its demonstration

The introduction of Sensor Web Enablement and SensorML
and
The demonstration of using SensorML as vehicle detectors in urban traffic control systems.
