Summary This research project is a subprogram of Research on establishment of marine meteorology of Taiwan main commercial harbors and flooding information under the main project 2015 Ocean disaster prevention technology and sustainable development project belonging to Institute of Transportation, Ministry of Transportation and Communications. The purpose is to ensure automatic operation and maintenance of the forecast simulation system TaiCOMS for waves, water elevations, and currents.

The achievements this year include (1) simulation and verification of middle scale astronomical tides, typhoon surges water levels, and small scale nearshore water level  and flow field using finite element hydrodynamic models; (2) wave field simulations of Longmen-Jianshan harbors of Penghu islands, using finite element wave models. In addition, evaluations of 2015 operational forecasts of marine meteorology, assisting update and maintenance of hardware and software, calibration of nearshore hydrodynamic modules for Keelung and Taipei harbors, and wave modules for Taipei Harbor are accomplished.

Beneficial results obtained in this project include ascertaining normal operation of the marine meteorology forecast simulation system and improving forecast quality for helping harbor operation, safeguarded seakeeping, providing information for prevention and rescuing disasters during typhoon and emergent sea perils. In addition, simulation results obtained in this project can be applied to blue highway between islands, in-time marine meteorology for seakeeping, and ensuring safety of ship navigation.
