Summary | Since 1995, the development of the ports in Taiwan Area has reviewed and a modified overall development plans brought out for the next five years and now it is in its third phase stage. In the third phase development plan, the domestic ports are included in the development plan. Due to the time limitation, the depth of the study on domestic ports could not compare with those of the international ports. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) decided to conduct a special project to further study the related issues of the domestic ports to cope with scope of the review work every five years. According to tentative scheduling of the implementation plan of the review work, the main work in this year will concentrate on the development of domestic shipping. It is hoped that the result of this in-depth study will be beneficial to the development of the domestic shipping industry. In order to improve the service quality of the domestic shipping and promote the domestic offshore tourism, this study reviews the issues related to the development of the current domestic shipping and makes extensive analysis on the development of domestic shipping in Japan as references to the study. The development strategies that meet the local requirements are proposed to accelerate the improvement process and modernization of the domestic shipping industry. In compliance with the continuing data collection work on the port and shipping situation in Mainland China of Institute of Transportation (IOT), this study also makes extensive data collection and analysis work on the river and coastal shipping in Mainland China to obtain the latest development information on this field in Mainland China. |
