Summary

This research is the second year of a 3-year (2021-2023) project. The aim is to build on the results of previous research and develop traffic conflict analysis tools. In addition to conducting annual pilot tests to verify the maturity and limitations of relevant technologies, the project collaborates with local governments to promote their application through analysis of accident-prone
locations.
This year, the project cooperated with the Directorate General of Highways of MOTC, Transportation Bureau of New Taipei City Government, and Transportation Bureau of Taichung City Government to conduct two pilot tests at a total of 13 intersections: right-turn conflicts and unsignalized intersection yield conflicts. For right-turn conflicts, we assess risk-driving behaviors such as right-turning vehicles not keeping to the right and through vehicles on the outer lane not moving away from the right side within 60 meters upstream of the intersection. For unsignalized intersection yield conflicts, we evaluate items such as vehicles not slowing down when passing the intersection, minor road vehicles not yielding, minor road vehicles not stopping and restarting,
vehicles in fewer lanes not yielding to those in more lanes, turning vehicles not yielding to straight-moving vehicles, and left-side vehicles not yielding to right-side vehicles. The procedures for traffic conflict analysis for high-risk intersections have been improved to provide reference for future application tools.
The project also continues to optimize relevant analysis technologies, including using GPU acceleration and model parameter optimization to shorten the stabilization processing accessing time of aerial videos to 1/2 ~ 1/4, and improving the recall rate of pedestrians, classification of bicycle objects, and vehicle detection frame deflection problem research and analysis. In addition
to developing related analysis functions for the pilot tests, the traffic conflict analysis software optimizes upgrades for trajectory/speed plotting, conflict hot zone image overlays, conflict video playback, and a two-stage left-turn judgment mechanism. This further analyzes potential causes of traffic conflicts and assists road management authorities in conducting early intersection traffic safety analysis and improvements.
