Title Study on Travel Demand Analysis Methods and Directions of Transportation Strategies for Seniors
Dept Transportation Planning and Land Transport Division
Year 2023
Month 4
Price 450
Summary

Taiwan will become a super-aged society by 2025, meaning that at least 20% of the population will be 65 or above. Since the travel behavior of elderly travelers is different from that of travelers of other ages, the travel patterns and trends identified by traditional transportation planning methods may not be proper for the coming super-aged society.
This project aims to investigate the travel behavior of elderly travelers in Taiwan and incorporate their travel characteristics into travel demand modeling so that the travel demands of the super-aged society will be appropriately demonstrated. The major tasks of this project include the following: examine the population growth patterns in cities, review relevant literature, investigate travel characteristics of elderly travelers, explore the feasibility of applying a big-data methodology to elderly traveler behavior analysis, explore the way to incorporate elderly traveler characteristics into travel demand modeling, and identify the strategic direction of transportation services for elderly travelers.
The research results show that under the trend of a declining birth rate and an aging population, the total population and the total number of trips are exhibiting a downward trend. However, the number of trips generated by the elderly population continues to rise, necessitating greater attention to their travel demands. The travel characteristics of the elderly differ from those of non-elderly groups, making it difficult to use existing statistics and big data gathered from surveys targeting the general population to establish transportation demand models for the elderly. In addition, regional transportation planning, constrained by its objectives, makes it challenging for existing transportation demand models and collected data to reflect the travel characteristics of the elderly population. In response to this, the project proposes survey items, sampling, and analysis methods for elderly travel demand, as well as a preliminary questionnaire design. The project also examines domestic and international aging transportation policies, identifies issues with rural transportation services and transportation information media, and offers recommendations for strategic directions for elderly transportation services in Taiwan.
