Title Applications and Comparisons of Traffic Conflict Analysis Using UAV Aerial Videography for Intersections
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 2021
Month 7
Price 500
Summary

According to statistics from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the number of fatalities in traffic accidents within 30 days was 2,865 in 2019, an increase of 85 people from 2018. Of these, 60% occurred at intersections. This study aims to diagnose traffic conflicts before traffic accidents occur and to develop preventive traffic engineering improvement measures to effectively prevent the occurrence of traffic accidents at intersections.
This research is an extension of the research results of the "Development of Road Traffic Flow and Accident Risk Detection and Analysis Tools" from 2018 and the "Development of UAV Traffic Photography and Conflict Analysis Technology at Intersections" from 2019. This study uses aerial videography to capture the trajectories of pedestrians and vehicles and performs traffic conflict analysis for intersections using traffic conflict analysis software. The classifications of traffic conflict types are further analyzed and linked with the "Examples of Traffic Engineering
Improvement Design for Various Types of Traffic Accidents" study by this Institute to derive the traffic engineering improvement measures from conflict analysis results.
The detection and tracking technology of pedestrian and vehicle trajectory aerial videography and the functions of the traffic conflict analysis software are also continuously improved and enriched during the implementation of this research. The study explored the traffic behavior at intersections to retrain the detection and tracking models for pedestrians and vehicles. New functions include a filter function for specific conflict types, identification of incoming and outgoing directions of traffic at intersections, and playback of conflict events. This enhances the ease of use.
In addition, this research systematically analyzed the literature on aerial photography and the domestic application requirements in the transportation field and the corresponding related technologies. Through a forum collecting opinions from experts and different fields, the traffic application scenarios of the aerial photography of pedestrians and vehicles were discussed, including seven basic application scenarios and six advanced application scenarios
