Title Building Hazard Perception for Motorcyclists and Drivers: Application of Motorcycle Accident Videos
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 2019
Month 8
Price 440
Summary Young and novice motorcyclists and drivers often overestimate their capabilities, and also ignore potential hazards on the road. Because they overestimate their skills and are also less experienced in dealing with dangerous situations, they have a relatively high accident risk in the transportation system. Traditional motorcyclist/driver training programs focus on lessons for learning basic car or motorcycle operating skills and understanding traffic laws. The traditional programs, particularly motorcyclist training programs, do not place enough emphasis on building hazard perception. Developing hazard perception through driver/motorcyclist training programs and driving/motorcycle riding tests has become an international trend.
This study focused on “the applications of motorcycle accident videos” for enhancing the hazard perception of motorcyclists and drivers. Video data of motorcycle accidents were collected. We systematically analyzed the risk factors
contributing to motorcycle accidents in different situations. The video education materials provide information about the possible causes of motorcycle accidents, and provide concepts to help drivers and motorcyclists learn how to avoid accidents. The materials can be displayed via digital display media. The digital display media can be used by educational materials users for further applications.
