Title Expanding the application of educational games to improve scooter rider safe driving behavior
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 2019
Month 12
Price 200
Summary

In order to strengthen the safety concept and hazard perception ability of young riders, we have tried to integrate design concepts such as situational tests and serious gaming, and developed a motorcycle safe riding learning game for smart phones and tablets in 2015-2016. Based on the previous project results, this project used existing game scene components to expand and improve the related game story setting, level design and operation interface, and completed the revision of the learning game.

In the operation interface, this project provide the player's perspective of the VR experience with the mobile phone sensor (electronic compass, three-axis accelerometer, gyroscope), so that the operation mode is closer to real life, such as turning around to observe the surroundings, looking down at the rear-viewmirror and dashboard, etc. In the story role setting, this project adds "Express Logistics" and "Special Agent Spy" elements, which allow players to be more immersed into the game, while strengthening their safe driving concept. In the level design, this project developed 11 learning levels, 3 test levels and a free driving level, and adds pedestrian interaction scenarios, weather visual effects, random events and a violation-auto-detection function. Through completing the game task and accumulating scores, the players can achieve the purpose of learning.

This project has developed a cross-platform learning system of safe motorcycle riding which has three different versions, including mobile game (Android), virtual reality headset with a controller (Oculus Go/Samsung Gear VR) and virtual reality headset with a motorcycle. This project cooperates with Taipei Jingwen High School, Yingge Vocational High School, New Taipei Industrial Vocational High School, Lunghua University of Science and Technology, Taipei University of Maritime Technology and Tatung University to conduct campus competitions. This project also cooperates with the Chiayi Motor Vehicle Office, and Tainan, Madou, Xinying and Yunlin Motor Vehicle Stations, and applied for promotion in the safety test of motorcycle driving license and campus/community promotion activities. Most participants of the event express a positive view on this kind of teaching and learning mode. There is also the positive impact of improved learning effectiveness.
