| Summary | In recent years, our government has made great efforts in promoting railway projects.However, the construction of railway systems requires enormous capital expenditure. Systematic methodologies and tools to analyze rail capacity are essential to economically provide appropriate capacity under expected service quality. Thus, the Institute of Transportation has been undertaking a series of researches since 2003. The results of these studies are compiled into "2019 Railway Capacity Manual in Taiwan". This manual includes three parts: "Foundations of Rail Capacity", "Capacity Analysis of Conventional Railways", and "Capacity Analysis of Urban Rail Transit Systems". The first part describes the fundamental concepts of rail capacity analysis. The methodologies of capacity analysis and the usages of capacity software for conventional regional railways and urban rail transit systems are introduced in the second and third parts respectively. Moreover, there are several examples to show how to analyze rail capacity via the software. In 2019, new content added to the second part, including the rail capacity model for continuous single-track sections and the new version capacity software. The Institute of Transportation will continue research works to enrich the Railway Capacity Manual in Taiwan. The manual will be a public source to be used in education, planning, and researches for railway agencies, universities, and research institutes. |
