The MOTC Values UAS Applications and Industrial Development

The unmanned aircraft systems (UAS industry is regarded with a “new blue sea with infinite possibilities.” It is expected to set off a disruptive revolution in the traditional industries. President Tsai Ing-wen also said, “The UAS is an industry that serves dual uses, both military and civil. The government must play a leading role to boost UAS industrial development in the private sector, thereby achieving bilateral synergistic effects between national defense and the economy.” The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) values the innovative applications and industrial development of UAS in the field of transportation. The “MOTC UAS Technology Task Group” was founded in 2018. In the “2021 White Paper on Transportation Technology Industry Policy,” “establishing an UAS for remote towns and outlying islands” and “expanding the importation of UAS assistive bridge testing operations” served as the milestone for innovative UAS applications by 2025, accelerating the application and industrial development of UAS in the field of transportation.

The Establishment of UAS-Taiwan under MOTC Guidance to Strengthen international Links

The UAS-Taiwan was established in March this year under MOTC guidance. It combined with UAS technology research and industry-government-academe-research collaboration strengthened the momentum of the UAS technology industry and international competitiveness, assisting the government in promoting the development of the UAS technology industry. So far, 60 units have been drawn to join the establishment.

In order to promote international cooperation and exchanges, UAS-Taiwan founding chairman Wu Men-Feng led a delegate of UAS businesses in Taiwan to visit important UAS industry promotion units in Japan on June 19, including the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), ACSL, Terra Drone, Blue Innovation, etc. They attended the Japan Drone Exhibition adhering by the goals of the 2025 Osaka Exposition and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Japan UAS Industrial Development Association) (JUIDA). Both sides will move toward technological co-creation and industrial cooperation and exchanges, formulating domestic and foreign talent training courses and jointly taking part in international events, thereby opening the gate of UAS industry cooperation between Taiwan and Japan.

The MOTC will subsequently learn from the experiences and outcomes of the current exchanges in Japan, while borrowing the example of successful foreign UAS application models. The government will play a crucial role and cooperate with the private sectors, thereby accelerating the application of UAS in the field of transportation and assisting industrial development.
