Subject Development and Application of Hazard Perception Learning Tool for Motorcycle Riders(2/2)
Purpose

Human factors are the primary contributing factors to traffic accidents. In particular, driving behaviors, which consist of a series of complicated tasks and mind activities, are affected by internal and external factors such as workload and driving experience. Driver mistakes may occur in any step of the driving process, including perception, comprehension, projection, judgment/decision, and performance of actions. While education is one of the main approaches to enhancing traffic safety, the project of year 2015 deduced human errors for several main themes of traffic accident risks on the basis of the theory of situational awareness. The deduced errors were then used as the basis for developing safety education materials for topics including “yield the right-of-way”, and “left, right, and hook turns in intersections”. A preliminary learning blueprint for motorcyclist education was proposed.

A prototype of motorcycle-driving simulation game was developed. Participants were recruited to examine the prototype, additionally questionnaire surveys and personal interviews were administered. Based on this prototype, the project of year 2016 aims to expand and refine the developed simulation game, especially to finalize the topic of “yield the right-of-way”. The effectiveness of the developed simulation game on motorcyclist safe driving behaviors will be evaluated too. Driver training schools and motor vehicle offices will be consulted to evaluate the possibility of incorporating the developed simulation game into driver-training courses and driver-license examination in practice. Finally, suggestions for applying and advertising the developed simulation games will be offered.
